Amber made the news!

Our lovely beauty therapist, Amber, is engaged and the amazing story of her mans proposal made it to www.stuff.co.nz! Such a gorgeous, funny story! Check it out here..

After months of planning and trying to keep his plans secret, Greg McGhie’s midair proposal nearly went awry.

A recently graduated pilot, McGhie began planning his proposal a couple of months ago before popping the question to his girlfriend of two years Amber-Jane Knap while 500 feet in the air.

Weather nearly got in the way, and he had to delay the flight by a day, having initially wanted to pop the question on Friday.

But he managed to take off on Saturday without a hitch, getting himself a yes in the process.

Under the guise of having a nice trip together, McGhie invited Knap, who had never been in such a small plane, on a flight.

“I was feeling pretty sick at the time,” Knap said.

Armed with a camera, and a sick-bag for good measure, Knap was taking photos of the scenery as they flew around the lower North Island.

While they were flying, Knap’s mother and step-father set up a 2.5 by 8-metre sign saying “will you marry me” on one of the family home’s paddocks.

“We were just over 500 feet… so it had to be quite a large sign. I was was hoping she would be able to see it,” McGhie said.

Knap missed the sign though, as she was too busy  taking photos to take notice.

“I just saw something in the paddock and thought they were digging something up,” she said.

McGhie insisted they do another fly-by.

“[Eventually] when I saw it, I screamed,” she said. “I turned around and he had the ring and everything. I just started bawling. It was so neat.”

McGhie said: “It wasn’t perfect, but it all worked out wonderfully.”

He worked on coming up with “some sort of plan”, but some fell through, until he came up with this idea.

And keeping it secret proved difficult for everyone involved.

“I roped everyone in to help get it all together in the last couple of weeks. They were just trying to avoid talking to Amber.”

Now they are already planning for next year’s wedding, and will be getting married on the same day as Knap’s grandmother did.

One of the best things about Christmas is the food! It is the one day of the year when feasting is expected, so make the most of it.

Ucol chef lecturer Hayden Robinson says traditional glazed ham is still a Christmas must-have and there are a few ways to do it.

Hayden says you can remove the skin and fat from the cooked ham, or leave it on, whatever your preference. But key to the look of the finished product is making criss-cross cuts all over the ham to form neat diamonds.  Then you can push whole cloves into the centre of each diamond or add traditional fruit decorations like cherries and pineapple.  Another traditional option is to use sliced almonds matched with a marmalade glaze.
The traditional glaze is made with Dijon mustard and liquid honey, but orange juice can also be added for a citrus twist.  When the ham is ready for glazing, gently heat your honey or marmalade mixture on the stovetop, or in the microwave, and mix with the mustard and optional orange juice.  The glaze is then brushed or poured over the ham.
Reheat the ham gently in a moderate oven – no more than 130 or 140 degrees Celsius or it will burn, warns Hayden.  A big ham will take an hour to warm through.
Hayden says ham is not the only option, though.  He says some people are putting a coated crust on a beef sirloin and roasting that, or cooking a whole salmon side for a real southern hemisphere Christmas.

A history of goodwill, peace to the world
All over the world, Christmas Eve is a night of mystery and magic. Although the Christmas story began with the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem more than two centuries ago, many of our traditions to celebrate the season go much further back.

Some, like bringing a conifer tree inside the home and exchanging gifts, have come from pagan Winter Solstice celebrations. In the northern hemisphere the shortest day is December 22 and in ancient times Northern European peoples would celebrate the turning point of winter and welcome back the sun. 

Our traditions on being merry and feasting come from this time, as the sun was crucial to the growth of crops and life on earth.  In Roman times, slaves were freed for seven days, and only the cooks and bakers were allowed to work.
These traditions later joined with the Christian celebrations of the birth of the son, also a ‘light’ to the world to Christians and offering the promise of new life.
Other traditions, like fruit cakes and puddings, and sending Christmas cards, are more recent and can be traced back to Victorian England. The Victorians loved Christmas and popularised carol singing and charity giving, as well as reviving older traditions of putting up decorations such as mistletoe. Christmas Cards!!! If the Kardashians can do it then why shouldn’t you?

Ok they get a top photographer to set them up some extravagant theme and probably have a person hired purely to organise the process from planning of clothing to writing personalised messages but you can do the more down to earth NZ one for your family and friends.
I use Photomaxing for my clients but again look online for many places to print them I think even Warehouse Stationary and Harvey Norman does them.

Three Tips on Family Spring Photos from Photographer, Tessa Russell

Tip 1: Use those blooming locations

The daffodils have arrived telling us it’s time for new beginnings! Shake off the wet winter and get outdoors with all the beautiful flowers in bloom for your family photos. If you are photographing your own memories try getting down in the grass to take a photo with a different perspective including fun flowers popping up in the foreground.

Tip 2: Bring the flowers indoors too
If it’s still a bit too chilly bring those new bloomers indoors to add to your photo as a prop or glue them onto a headband for a gorgeous new accessory.

Tip 3: Break out the COLOUR
Spring is all about color. Be it pastels like pink and teal or brighter colors like orange and reds. Research the latest outfits or colour tones that match on Pinterest and experiment.

Stress Management

STOP, REVIVE, REFRESH.

Do you have a desk job? Working at a desk all day can tighten your muscles leading to everything from headaches to back pain. Treat yourself to a 5 minute break and try the Swan Dive, a chest and shoulder stretch that helps relieve the strain of hunching over a desk all   day. This easy move will also work to strengthen the abdominal muscles, which are crucial for proper spinal support.

To do the Swan Dive, sit straight in your chair, lengthen your arms in front of you and press hands gently on to the desk top. (Move your chair closer or further away to make sure arms are straight and feet are flat on the floor.) Inhale and lengthen up through spine, then gently press down through your hands as you arch the top of the head and neck backwards, feeling the spine deepening between the shoulder blades. Exhale and hold the position for a moment, keeping the abdominals strongly engaged up the front of the trunk. Inhale and start to lengthen the spine up between the shoulder blades, bringing the neck and head upright last. Repeat 5 times, then gently round the spine forward when you are done, keeping arms gently placed on the desk.

Taking little mini breaks throughout the day is a perfect time to revive your skin as well as stretch out any kinks in your muscles.

REVIEW: Decléor Paris facial with aromaplasty

Considered Decléor’s signature facial, the aromaplasty not only gives your skin a fantastic cleanse, serious exfoliation and nutritional burst, but includes some lovely massage, too. In fact the aromaplasty facial begins with a relaxing back massage in a dimly lit, lightly scented room, perfect for winding down from a busy day and preparing for the pampering to follow.

After the back massage, the wonderful Roz cleansed and exfoliated my face, and then prepared the aromaplasty cataplasm, which is another word for a steaming oaty facial poultice. Clever administration of a gauze facial wrap and eye covers before application meant there was no chance of the thick aromaplasty escaping. Instead it sat, warming and comfortably heavy, on my face working its magic on my skin.

The aromaplasty’s ingredients include flax powder, wheat germ and sunflower, resulting in a soothing, fragrant mixture reminding me of the scent of hot porridge or fresh hay in the sun.

While the cataplasm was working, I was also treated to a massage of my arm and hands, as well as the upper chest. Later, there was more massage, this time of my face, especially around the often-tense sinus area.

I had my session at 8pm, and by the time the hour had finished I felt relaxed enough to go straight to bed.

Roz suggested drinking a lot of water in the subsequent hours or next day as the massage and facial can release toxins that have built up in the body. I certainly felt a bit sluggish the next day, which meant I hadn’t drunk enough – or perhaps need to get on the recommended monthly facial schedule to prevent such a build up! My skin, though, which is often a bit coarse, felt smooth and fresh, and certainly looked clearer.

Pania Ryan offers five different Decléor facials in the current treatment menu, and the aromaplasty one is about a half-way point between the 30-minute express facial and the 90-minute aroma advance.

After the facial, I discovered that Decléor was founded in 1974 in Paris by a team made up of a beautician, doctor, physiotherapist, shiatsu teacher and aromatherapist – so that explains the combination of therapeutic massage and deep skin nourishment in Decléor treatments! It’s a winning mix.

Tips for autumn beauty

Skin – The dry summer months can take a toll on your skin. Autumn is the perfect time to revitalise, renew and rehydrate your skin back to optimum health.

Kia ora Pania, thanks for letting me come in today to share a little bit about your lush beauty retreat in Palmerston North.  Could you tell us what Pania Ryan Beauty Retreat has to offer?

Our philosophy is Empowering Women, so that’s the base of where we start everything. What I believe we do, is we look after the community, so we look after lots of women. I view women as being the hub of the family and the hub of the community, so if we are helping them feel relaxed and comfortable, and giving them good self esteem then they can go off and look after their circle of family and friends. So we work with individuals through beauty therapy by looking after their skin,by  looking after their inner and external health. We help people relax, we help them bring out the best of their beauty, which is both inner and outer beauty, and we have all the traditional beauty therapy treatments.

What sets you apart from other Beauty services in the area?

I think it’s the energy in the people we have here. At the beginning of the year we look where we’re at and develop a programme for each individual therapist, a career development goal, which we support them in working towards for the whole year. Then we also have goals that we share as a team. That energy, excitement and passion for what we do is passed on to our customers, and I believe that is what makes us unique.

How long has Pania Ryan Beauty Retreat been open for and what was your background before you started it.

We’ve been here at the Hotel Coachman coming up 6 years, however, I have been in business for myself for close to 30 years, eeekkk, so a wee while. I have the experience; I’ve seen lots of things in my industry come and go and seen lots of changes, especially technical changes. Science, technology and the world that we are now in is changing continuously so our industry changes constantly as well. For us, we’ve decided to stay with the more holistic or natural side. I’m trained in massaging therapy which is my base, and I’ve also worked in a pharmacy background so with the makeup etc. I used to work on a counter selling Christian Dior and Yves Saint Laurent so I have a passion for lovely things. I also trained as an aromatherapist for 2 years at UCOL and I love aromatherapy and natural healing. I’ve used all of this as the base of my business and it’s grown from there. It’s like a cake, it’s got lots of layers to it.

You have definitely made your stamp in the community – winning awards, the extra effort you put into your clients, giving back to your community – you are obviously very successful and not just in the money sense. What do you think has been the secret to your all-round success?

You have to enjoy people and really enjoy what you do. For me it’s a lifestyle, and I think of my clients as being part of my family, so I treat them as if they are coming to my home. We are a bit unusual in that we hug a lot of our clients because they have been coming for years and years and we know all about them – we know their jobs, we know what their favourite movies are, so it’s all about making them feel at home in my home.

Is there anything exciting for us to look forward to in 2014 from Pania Ryan Beauty?

We are rocking out 2014! I am loving this year already, we have had the best start to the year that we’ve ever had, and it was a highly successful Christmas for us in business terms. This time of the year there are lots of weddings going on, new beginnings, and lots of babies arriving, so from our clients’ perspective it’s a lovely time of the year. From our business perspective we have quite a bit going on too. We are attending conference in February with Decleor Paris and the French trainer is coming out to launch a new product range which is always exciting for us. Decleor sell French Aromatherapy products and they are absolutely beautiful. We are very passionate about them and have been the top salon in NZ several times and won the most improved salon in NZ several times. It’s pretty amazing for lovely little provincial Palmerston North and we love it when we can edge those girls out from the bigger cities. Decleor are also launching a competition for a trip to Paris for their 40^th Anniversary so we are going to be part of that. We also won top salon 4 years ago so we are hoping to do that again. Also through Pure Fiji products we took part in a sales incentive programme which ran for the year involving New Zealand and Australia, and through that we won a trip to Fiji in May as well as training options. We are also going to the international beauty therapy expo in September in Australia, where we go to look what’s new, what the latest technology is, and what we can bring back that is holistic and natural, as well as being on the edge of technology. Then two of our girls are entering a beauty therapist of the year competition with a brand called Joyce Blok which is a NZ product range so we have a program supporting them to achieve their goals.  If they don’t win it doesn’t matter, it’s just about giving it a try and a reason for learning and sharing. I’m sure there will be lots more to add to that list, it’s just a nice big melting pot.

Wow, I love how you have goals for yourself, your customers, and your team, as well as your business, you really do cover all the bases. Being a business owner is not easy, what are your three top tips for someone looking to start their own business?

Have passion for what you do then you will always want to learn more and better what you do. Ask for help; ask for referrals, ask for direction, and ask for feedback. That’s from your customers as well as your colleagues because people always want to help. If you’re genuine most people won’t say no, and if they do that’s because they have their own agenda which is ok, you just go on and ask the next person, especially when you are beginning because people love to help when you are starting out. Also look after yourself, so try to keep “balance” in your life. Try to eat well, sleep well and keep moving.

Now talking about keeping balance in your personal life what would you recommend with Valentine’s Day coming up at the end of this week, for a little gift?

 I always think it’s lovely to give a gift whether it’s for Valentine’s Day, a birthday, to say well done, or just to say I love you to someone. We have a spa package that I think is really quite neat and it’s called “A little piece and quiet”. It’s a perfect gift for a male or female of any age group, that includes a beautiful aromatherapy back massage, a lovely facial and a wee pedicure to finish, so it’s a complete top to toe relaxation and you go away feeling really lovely. It’s an hour and a half so is called “A little piece and quiet” for those people who are time challenged but really want something special. We always have special promotions going on so people can keep an eye out for those on our Facebook page.

What do you like to do on your days off?

Well, we are very eclectic family. I love fishing and the outdoors, camping, tramping and all that outdoorsy stuff which is a little bit of a surprise to some people. My partner Rob is in the motor industry so we do lots of motor sports, and I was brought up in a Speedway attending family so have been going since I was 12. Rob has raced rally cars and been a top navigator in NZ for 5 years now, so the rallying scene is a big part of us. I also have 2 daughters; Sarah 23 and Laura 18 and they are a part of their own world of young women. I’ve also recently joined the Venus Network which is a wonderful women’s business network, and I have been involved for many years supporting Zonta network which is an international women’s group. They do a lot of work around the community – they’ve done a lot of work for Women’s Refuge, breast cancer,and they do scholarships, fundraisers and so much more. I also love travelling. I’d love to say I love cooking but I prefer eating haha so I love going to cook schools. We quite often organise groups of clients to go to these together.

You have a lot to do within your community so what makes you love your community so much?

I just think Palmerston North is an amazing community. I think one of the privileges is we have a beautiful landscape to live in. It’s really easy to get around, and people are really down to earth and helpful. I think there are lots of people here who excel in so many different industries – we have so many who are brilliant leaders. I really admire women in this community, I think there are many women doing amazing things by really stepping out and taking part in our community and that’s in commercial business down to community support, there’s always people rallying around to support each other. I think that’s where we are different from a big city – we are much more laid back and I love that about Palmerston North.

You obviously love this city but what improvements would you like to see in your community in the next 5 years?

I think we have a lot of good systems and plans in place. There are people in council and business that are improving and tweaking these systems and I think it would be great if more members of the community supported them. They could take a little time to understand the changes and the direction that we are going in, to see the bigger picture of why they are making those changes.

Also the student population is very important to us. I don’t know the figures but almost half of our city’s population are youth, so a better understanding of youth and what they need from our city is important. They are intelligent, inquiring minds, and they are our future! The flipside of that coin is the more mature members of our community. They’ve lived a life, and often a really interesting life completely different to ours, so we need to be looking at them and what they need. And remember they still have a lot of knowledge to share.

What is your best beauty tip?

Take an everyday task, like bathroom time, and make it into a wonderful experience.Take your morning routine and make it into something wonderful by using beautiful products on yourself – a lovely exfoliant, a great smelling shower gel, not just something from the supermarket. Spend some time to moisturise, massage and love your body. Take your time to do your hair and when you leave the house you’ll feel like a million dollars. Take that 5 minutes, I’m not talking about spending hours in there, but just that extra 5 minutes to treat yourself like a princess so you are anchored for the day and then you can cope with anything that comes your way.
