With pedicure hygiene recently getting a whole lot more sophisticated, we jumped at the chance to introduce the new technology into our clinic! High hygiene practise is an integral part of our business operation, so making this technology available to our clients was a given!

Submerging your feet into luxuriously warm water, having a foot and lower leg massage with hydrating oils and lotions, and getting your nails clipped, buffed and painted sounds heavenly! Hygiene is improved, and cross contamination between clients is a thing of the past!

So, why have pedicures?

Since it’s winter you may be thinking “what’s the point in making your feet look pretty when no one’s going to see them?”. As feet are tucked away in socks, covered shoes and slippers during the cooler months, looking after our feet often becomes a redundant body care ritual. It’s easy to see why many people forget about taking care of their feet over winter, however, pedicures are not only for making your feet look lovely! There are many benefits to having pedicures all year round!

Reduce your chance of infections

Correct maintenance of your nails (cleaning, clipping and buffing) stops them from growing inward and causing infection. Removing dirt from under your nails, as well as dead skin cells from your feet, also help to reduce your chances of germs taking hold!

Skin health

Pedicures are a great way to identify early signs of corns, bunions and fungal infections. If problems are detected your pedicurist will be able to refer you to a doctor or podiatrist for treatment.

Massage is the most relaxing part of a pedicure and works wonders to stimulate blood and lymph flow. When lymph nodes in our legs get a build up of toxins they can swell and feel sore. Leg massage is an effective way to improve circulation and in turn help toxins drain more freely.

The warm foot soaks and massages with oils and lotions help nourish skin and locks in moisture so your feet are less likely to crack and blister, which if this happens, increases your chances of germs setting in and causing infections and fungal diseases. Keeping cuticles moisturised also promotes strong, healthy nail growth.

Dead skin cell removal

Exfoliation is often included in pedicure treatments, which is when dead skin cells are buffed away, reducing your chances of getting corns and bunions. When dead skin is removed, new cells (which create smoother skin) are also able to grow!

Following a recent client’s healing massage experience from one of our beauty and massage therapists, we wanted to share her story with you and to also let you in on some amazing facts about massage and why it’s so good for you!

One of our clients was recently overtaken by a heavy cold with all the usual unpleasant symptoms (congested sinuses, tickly, mucus cough, fluctuating temperature, fatigue). She was finding the cough, in particular, hard to shake, so Una (one of our master beauty/massage therapists) was called in to help!

Una got to work by first attending to the client’s pressure points on her feet – and much to the client’s surprise, she found it very tender in some of the spots Una was pressing. This was enough to give Una an indication as to what parts of the body the cold was affecting the client as well as the type, length and strength of massage the client needed. After Una had finished the massage, the client revealed “she instantly felt better”, and she “couldn’t believe how her cough practically stopped from then on”. “It was like something was blocked and Una was able to free up the congestion so it could drain away!”

We were over the moon that Una was able to use her skills and experience to help our client feel better!

So the cooler mornings and dark evenings have set in….autumn is here and winter is looming…but it’s not all doom and gloom…this time of the year brings plenty of fun change to our lives! Not only do the trees glow beautiful golden hues, and we get to bring out our fab winter wardrobes with boots, stylish jackets and warm winter makeup colours, but we also get to revamp our skincare regime! Just like our clothes, we need to swap our skincare products to suit the season so we continue to radiate all year round!

Firstly let’s take a look at how this change of season effects our skin…

Cooler autumn and winter weather tends to be drier and have less humidity than summer. The drier the air the more moisture is sucked from our skin, which is why we often experience dry and flaky skin, as well as ezchema, in winter!

If you work in an environment with a blasting heating system all day, this again reduces humidity, resulting in dehydrated skin.

The cooler seasons can stop us feel as thirsty as in summer, which can result in a lower level of fluids being consumed! This is an obvious one as the less water we drink the more dehydrated we become. As well as looking after our skin from the outside, we must also pay close attention to what we feed our skin from the inside! There’s nothing like tucking into healthy soups and herbal teas when it’s cold outside! Not only do they warm you up and their liquid content helps to keep you hydrated, they’re also a great way to give you vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that are essential for glowing skin! One of our favourite soup recipes right now is Bestow Beauty’s Roast Cauliflower Soup! It is packed with vitamin B5, which the Bestow team explains ‘is an important vitamin for collagen formation and necessary for your skin to have a healthy oil production’. Here’s the recipe…

Ingredients:

1 tbsp olive oil
1 onion, quartered
1 medium size cauliflower – florets
4 garlic cloves
, peeled
4-6 cups vegetable stock (low salt)
juice of 1 lemon
1 tsp cumin powder
1 tsp curry powder
1 tablespoon parsley, finely chopped
salt and pepper to taste

Method:

Preheat the oven to 180 degrees celsius. Shake the cauliflower florets, onion and garlic cloves in a plastic bag with the olive oil. Place all on a baking tray and roast for 30 minutes until the cauliflower is golden brown on the edges.

Remove from the oven, add to a food processor with all the other ingredients and process until smooth. Add more stock if you like a thinner soup.

Pour into a saucepan, heat for 10 minutes over a medium heat and serve.

1/2 quantity of filtered water or coconut water

1/2 quantity of apple or pineapple juice

1 banana

1 pear or apple – can be pealed if preferred (optional)

1 dsp of Bestow Beauty Oil

A handful of leafy greens (kales, silverbeet, spinach)

1 handful of frozen or fresh dark berries (optional)
